A large number of fires are caused by open flames. At Easter, there is a lot of fire handling due to religious activities.

Candles pose a great danger. To light and operate them safely:
- only light candles that are not damaged.
- only light candles using a lighter or match.
- only place candles on a non-flammable and stable surface
- always keep candles under observation while burning
- continue to observe the installation area after extinguishing. Flying sparks can cause ignition.

The following must be observed when burning Easter fires:
- Only approved Easter fires may be lit. These fires must be registered with the authorities in advance.
- Watch out for animals in the vicinity. They can hide in the piles.
- Do not use petrol to light the fire.
- Ensure sufficient distance from flammable objects. These can be examples: Meadows, trees, buildings, various storage facilities,...
- Keep the fire under constant observation while it is burning
- Extinguish the fire completely after it has burned down.
- Check several times at intervals of approx. 1 hour to ensure that it does not flare up again.
